BHRT Facts

What are the advantages of bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT)?

There are several advantages to restoring hormones to optimal levels. Both men and women report feeling more energetic, less depressed, and better rested when hormones like testosterone and estradiol are balanced. Optimizing hormones improves libido and reduces the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Additionally, BHRT can increase resistance to age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and maximize weight loss.

What makes bioidentical hormones different from synthetics?

Bioidentical hormones closely mimic the biochemical structure of hormones produced by the body. They are derived from plant sources rather than animal sources, achieving the most precise biochemical makeup for optimal metabolism. Because the body more readily recognizes hormones from sources such as yams, there are minimal side effects, if any, to this method of hormone optimization.

Does everyone get the same treatment?

No. Men and women have different requirements when it comes to optimal hormone levels. Some women receive both testosterone and estrogen pellets from plant sources, while others receive only testosterone. Men treated with bioidentical testosterone are striving for a level of approximately 900, whereas a woman needs much less. Dr. Emery treats every patient based on the results of precise lab work that measures each of these hormones and more. About four weeks after initial treatment, we repeat lab work to ensure our dosage was on target for your needs.

Why pellets?

Creams have been a popular delivery method for hormone replacement therapy. However, research has demonstrated significant benefits to pellet therapy. The use of a hormone cream does heighten levels of desired hormones. However, there may be “peaks and valleys”. Pellet therapy delivers a consistent dosage as directed by the body’s needs. Your body absorbs and uses hormones from pellets as needed to help you live with greater vitality.

How long do pellets last?

Every individual will metabolize pellets at their own unique rate. That being said, we typically see men every 5-6 months, and women every 3-5 months. Most people can tell when it is time for retreatment based on their overall feelings of wellbeing, energy, and sexual drive.

Are there side effects to pellet therapy?

The most common side effects to pellet therapy include temporary bruising and mild swelling. Additional side effects, which are less frequent, include acne and hair growth, both easily treatable.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

Some insurance companies will cover lab fees. While we do not participate with any insurance, we are happy to provide you with a bill that you can submit for reimbursement. During your consultation for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, we can also discuss your options for payment.
